"The Alamo Archways" Mixed Media Layout for Donna Salazar Designs

Hi my dear crafty friends! I have a new Creative Team project for Donna Salazar Designs with a girlie grunge layout featuring some of her Spellbinder and Donna Salazar with Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L products.

Gary and I recently took a trip to the lovely city of San Antonio, Texas. While there we visited the site of the Alamo filled with rich history. This long archway struck me with it's beauty. I've been working my way through using all 20 of Donna's fabulous new Spellbinder products released last month. I've tucked a die cut created with her Cascading Stars etched die under and next to the photo. So perfect to give a patriotic touch. Of course you know how much I enjoy creating hand crafted flowers, so have also paired Donna's new Big Blossom and Jumbo Rose dies with her classic Bitty Blossoms and Rose creations for these girlie grunge flowers. I've added grungy color by mixing Donna Salazar with Scrapbook Adhesive by 3L Pigment Powders into her Girlie Grunge Art Medium. Please hop on over to Donna's blog for more details and close-ups HERE.

The contest opens at midnight on May 18th and closes at midnight on the 25th.

Here's the project that I created for you today.

Please note, in the spirit of full disclosure, I have received some of the products used to create this canvas. I use what I love and recommend only what I believe in.

Donna is the queen of girlie grunge, however, I went totally masculine guy grunge on this canvas. I simply adore Donna's Spellbinders® gear dies. I used her new Gears Steel Rule Die to cut the larger gears on the left side of the canvas with heavy chipboard, then cut several Sprightly Sprockets gears from thin chipboard to tuck around the photo on the right.

Even up close in person they look like metal and are so easy to create. Donna's Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L® Pigment Powders give a perfect metallic sheen for this grungy technique. I've created a VIDEO TUTORIAL to show you how to make them.

Enjoy!

Close-ups

Here's a close-up of the Faux Metal Gears.

The background paper was adhered to the canvas with Donna's Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L® Girlie Grunge Art Medium. I also brushed a coat onto the front side of the paper and while wet dabbed lightly with a paper towel to create texture. When dry, I rubbed the textured surface with Gold and Silver Pigment powders.

The linked rings under the gears are cut with Donna's new Spellbinders® Cascading Circles Die from thin chipboard and painted with Silver Pigment Powder mixed into Girlie Grunge Art Medium.

The torn paper framing the photo is embossed with Donna's new Spellbinders® Splattered Circles Embossing Folder and of course rubbed with her Gold and Silver Pigment Powders. The torn edges are inked with Donna's Clearsnap Stormy Mix'd Media Inx as well as the torn edges of the background paper.

I have a funny story to share about the rusted metal washer tucked in amongst the gears. I was invited to a birthday celebration for one of my scrapbooking friends. On our way into the restaurant, a glint of rust caught my eye, and I picked up this gem commenting, "I can use this on one of my projects." The girls all laughed knowing it wouldn't be long before I used it.

Here you can see the Sprightly Sprockets I cut from thinner chipboard. I Treated them similarly to the gears in the video, but just used one coat of paint and did not heat it to bubble.

Before applying the background paper, I painted the edges with sandstone color paint, applied a stenciled design with molding paste colored with Donna's Gold Pigment powder, then rubbed gold and silver pigment powders across the entire edge.

Shabby Flower Card with Handcrafted Flowers for Donna Salazar

I have a project up on the Donna Salazar Designs blog featuring more of her fab new Spellbinders products. Bitty Blossoms have long been one of my favorite die sets. I used them so much, that I purchased a second set so I could cut more at a time. So, you can imagine my excitement when I saw that Donna's new dies included Big Blossom, the next size up from her Bitty Blossoms dies. It can be used alone, or you can combine it like I did with her Bitty Blossoms to create gorgeous large, full flowers. I hope you'll stop by Donna's blog for more photos and all the details HERE.

Here's a sneak peek:

Watercolor Poppies with VIDEO TUTORIAL ~ Scraps of Elegance April Kit

It is always so exciting when I have the opportunity to learn and develop a new technique. I was so thrilled to receive the Creativity Add on with the Prima Water Soluble Oil Pastels, Himalayan Poppy stamp, and Prima Water brushes along with the Color Add On Brusho Crystals. I heat embossed the stamped image and watercolored the gorgeous poppies. I am not a watercolor artist, so I gave myself the freedom to paint samples to help learn techniques as well figuring out color selection.

I have created a technique video sharing how to watercolor this fabulous image with the Creativity and Color Add On products.

Enjoy!

Here's a close-up photo:

To finish the image for this card, I rubbed ThermoWeb Deco Foil Transfer Adhesive across a foam makeup sponge and used it to apply the adhesive to a script stamp which I used around the edges and in to the poppy image. I let it sit until completely dry then applied the gold Deco Foil from the main kit. As I suspected with using such a detailed stamp, the gold did not adhere to all of the stamping. I pulled out my Sweet Violet Purple Teal Lindy's Stamp Gang Magicals from a previous SOE kit and rubbed it lightly across the card, which left a lovely halo of purple around the poppies and darkened into a lovely teal on the stamped areas. To deepen the shading around the edges, I rubbed Donna Salazar with Clearsnap Mix'd Media Inx in Wisteria, then went over that very, very lightly with Indigo. The outer paper border is the BoBunny Garland paper from the Main Kit, stamped with a grungy stamp in Wisteria. Finally I added a sentiment stamped on vellum.

Watercolor Dragonfly Card ~ May Craft Hoarders Anonymous Blog Hop

Welcome to the May Craft Hoarders Anonymous Blog Hop!

You should be coming to my blog from Donna Idlet. Then after visiting me, hop over to Bonnie Garby. To start at the beginning of the hop, please head over to Gloria Stengel! You can scroll down to the bottom of this post for a full list of designers participating in this month's blog hop.

Have you ever see a cool technique, buy a collection of products to use and then it sits there collecting dust? Last year I saw some really amazing projects created with Brusho Crystal Colours, so of course I purchased the entire set. I created one card when I first got them, then there they sat. My goal for this month's hoarder's hop was to put those watercolour crystals to good use. This is a different project than I usually create - no dimension and little texture, but I adore the visual effect. I've finished off my card using paper, embossing powder, and a stamp that I've had for several years.

Most of my cards are too thick to mail easily, so it's nice to create one that can simply be addressed, stamped, and sent on its way!!

And here's a close-up so you can see the lovley watercolour effect behind this embossed image. The wings are a mixture of Lindy's Stamp Gang Magicals and Brushos, while the background is created with two colors of Brusho Crystals.

I hope you've been inspired to grab a neglected technique product
and put it to good use on an upcoming project!!

Your next stop on the Craft Hoarders Anonymous Blog Hop is the talented Bonnie Garby. If you have dropped by my blog and would like to start at the beginning, be sure to hop on over to Gloria's blog HERE.
